How to Use the Discount Calculator

The discount calculator helps you work out the final sale price, the amount saved, the discount percentage, or the original price before a reduction. It also handles two or three percentage discounts applied one after another.

How to Calculate a Discount

A percentage discount reduces the original price by a stated percentage. First calculate the discount amount, then subtract that amount from the original price.

Discount amount Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)
Sale price Sale Price = Original Price - Discount Amount

You can also calculate the final price directly by multiplying the original price by the percentage you still need to pay.

Direct sale price formula Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount % ÷ 100)

Discount Formula With a Simple Example

25% off a $120 item

Original price: $120

Discount: 25%

Discount amount: $120 × 0.25 = $30

Sale price: $120 – $30 = $90

You pay: 75% of the original price

This means a 25% discount saves $30 on a $120 item and leaves a final price of $90.

How to Calculate the Sale Price After a Discount

If the original price and discount percentage are known, the quickest method is to calculate the percentage you pay.

For a 30% discount, you pay 70% of the original price. A $250 item at 30% off therefore costs:

Example $250 × 0.70 = $175

The amount saved is $75. This method is useful for mental checks because the paid percentage is always 100% minus the discount percentage.

How to Find the Discount Percentage

If you know the original price and the sale price, you can calculate the percentage discount from the difference between them.

Discount percentage formula Discount % = [(Original Price - Sale Price) ÷ Original Price] × 100

Price reduced from $200 to $150

Amount saved: $200 – $150 = $50

Discount: $50 ÷ $200 × 100 = 25%

The result shows both the percentage saved and the amount still paid. In this example, the buyer saves 25% and pays 75% of the original price.

How to Find the Original Price Before a Discount

Sometimes the sale price and discount percentage are known, but the original price is missing. In that case, divide the sale price by the percentage paid.

Original price formula Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 - Discount % ÷ 100)

If a product costs $80 after a 20% discount, the buyer is paying 80% of the original price.

Example $80 ÷ 0.80 = $100

So the original price was $100 and the discount amount was $20.

Fixed Amount Discount vs Percentage Discount

A percentage discount depends on the original price. A fixed amount discount removes the same money amount regardless of the percentage that amount represents.

Multiple Discounts and Effective Discount

Multiple percentage discounts are applied in sequence. Each new discount is calculated from the price left after the previous discount.

For example, start with a $200 item. Apply 20% off first:

First discount $200 × 0.80 = $160

Then apply another 10% discount to $160:

Second discount $160 × 0.90 = $144

The final price is $144. The total amount saved is $56, which means the effective discount is 28%.

Why 20% Off Plus 10% Off Is 28%, Not 30%

Sequential percentage discounts should not normally be added together. The second discount applies to a smaller price.

Effective discount formula Effective Discount = [1 - (1 - d1) × (1 - d2)] × 100

For 20% and 10%:

Calculation [1 - (0.80 × 0.90)] × 100 = 28%
For percentage-only stacked discounts, changing the order does not change the final mathematical result because the remaining-price multipliers are multiplied together. Mixing a fixed money discount with a percentage can produce different results depending on the order.

Percentage You Save vs Percentage You Pay

These two percentages always add to 100% in a standard percentage discount.

Percentage paid Percentage Paid = 100% - Discount %

A 40% discount means you save 40% and pay 60%. A 15% discount means you save 15% and pay 85%.

Showing both figures makes it easier to check a sale price without doing the full calculation again.

How to Calculate Discounts in Excel or Google Sheets

You can reproduce the same discount calculations in a spreadsheet. Assume:

  • A2 = original price
  • B2 = discount percentage entered as a whole number, such as 25
  • C2 = sale price
Discount amount =A2*(B2/100)
Sale price =A2*(1-B2/100)
Discount percentage from original and sale price =(A2-C2)/A2

Format the last formula as a percentage. If the discount value in B2 is already stored as 25% rather than the number 25, use =A2*(1-B2) instead.

Common Discount Calculation Mistakes

  • Adding stacked discounts. Two percentage discounts normally apply one after another.
  • Using sale price as the starting value. Discount percentage is usually measured against the original price.
  • Mixing fixed and percentage discounts. $20 off and 20% off are only equal when the original price is $100.
  • Ignoring the order of mixed discounts. A fixed discount followed by a percentage can differ from the reverse order.
  • Adding tax into the discount formula. Tax should be calculated separately when local rules require it.
  • Assuming a larger percentage always means a better deal. The starting price still matters.
